What is the Breakfast study?

The Breakfast Study is a research trial studying the effects, in adults with type 2 diabetes, of following a very low-carbohydrate breakfast for four months.

Participants will receive

  • Support from a Dedicated Coach
A nutrition coach will offer guidance, motivation, and tips on sustaining healthy lifestyle changes.
  • Online Resources
Over 4 months, access to videos, text messages, cookbooks, and other resources designed to support you through the process.
  • Financial Compensation
Eligible participants will receive up to $100 for completing all study assessments.

Who can participate?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are an adult.
    You're between 18 and 80 years old.
  • Have type 2 diabetes.
And, you have an HbA1c of 7% or higher.
  • Are ready for a dietary change.
You're ready to follow a promising dietary approach for type 2 diabetes: a very low carbohydrate ("keto") breakfast, which cuts out most sugars and starches. Breakfasts might include eggs, omelets, bacon, keto waffles, keto pancakes, coffee with full cream, smoothies, and/or full-fat yogurt with nuts or seeds and some berries. We will work with you to find breakfasts that you find delicious and are very low-carb.

“Not enough good things to say about how empowered I feel because of the study. Thank you all so much.”

FAQs

Why is nutrition being studied for type 2 diabetes?
Emerging research suggests that changing just one's breakfast to be very low-carbohydrate can have important effects on glucose control. This study aims to build on that knowledge.

What if I have never tried a very low-carbohydrate breakfast before?
No experience is required. We will provide all the resources you need, including recipes, guides, and coaching.

Can I change all my meals?
No. For this trial, we're testing the effect of just changing your breakfasts. So, we ask you to keep everything else the same.

Do I need to live near a study center?
No, the Breakfast Study is conducted mostly online. You’ll participate from the comfort of your own home. You will need to live in the United States and near one of the many Labcorp locations. https://www.labcorp.com/labs-and-appointments

Are there any costs to participate?
There are no costs to join the trial, but participants are responsible for purchasing their own food.

Will I meet other participants?
Yes, each month there is an optional question and answer session with all of the other participants currently in the study, plus your coach.

What is the compensation amount?
Participants who complete the study will receive up to $100 as well as free results from their blood tests that are conducted as part of the trial at Labcorp.
